Gretton Primary School

Science Week

March brought Science week to Gretton School!

The whole school engaged a range of experiments and investigations focused around climate change.

Rita the Refill Revolution van visited the school during the week. The whole school had an assembly all about sustainable use and were given the option to fill up a plastic bottle from home with eco washing up liquid from the Refill Revolution van.

Mini Mad scientists turned up one day in Rowan Class (Reception class) and did many hands on experiments including the exciting cola and mentos explosion! Oak class created posters to encourage others to 'Save the Earth’ and decided they wanted to help make a change and pledged to use a car less and walk more where possible. Ash and Maple concentrated on the impact of icebergs melting with various investigations. Willow Class looked at the dangers of declining numbers of bees and insects – What would happen if they became extinct? Why is pollination so important? To help our very important insects, Willow class created bug houses made out of natural and recyclable resources. Sycamore class programmed software and circuits to create earthquake alarms.

One of the parents who works in environmental sustainability spoke to the older children about how we can reduce our carbon footprint, which they found very interesting.

Children were given the opportunity to design and make a bird feeder using recyclable materials and a prize was given for the winning design. The children learnt alot and did amazingly well throughout the week, soaking up so much knowledge and understanding of how we can look after our world.
