Years 4, 5 and 6 pupil recently decorated umbrellas to form part of an art piece that will be displayed at Corby’s Mardi Gras.

The project was part of a workshop run by Same Sky, an award-winning community art charity that travel across the UK bringing people together through art.

In pairs, pupils were challenged to decorate a white umbrella using only three squares of black sticky back paper and ribbons. The shapes will then block out areas of light when a light is shone onto it and this will create beautiful patterns to form part of a luminous night-time parade.

This is the second time the students have taken part in the project, which five other local primary schools are also a part of, to help create around 400 umbrella designs.

Pupil Phoebe said ‘We had lots of fun making our umbrellas today. I really enjoyed creating my own decorations and cannot wait to see my design used in the parade.’

A representative from the project said ‘The workshops gets the children working together and allows them to be really creative as they have the freedom to create something unique, no two designs are the same. It is great that the children get to see something small they have made become part of a large-scale local project. We encourage the children and their families to come across to the parade to see their projects in all their glory and enjoy an evening full of artwork and music.’

The Corby Mardis Gras, celebration of light and music will take place outside the Corby Cube on Saturday 24th March from 3-8pm with the parade running from 6-8pm. Pupils can visit the parade with family and friends to see the display of their work. To find out more information about the event please click here.
