Gretton break records for ‘Ambition for All’ month

This month Gretton Primary Academy are torchbearer of ‘Ambition For All’ month, an initiative which is running across all Brooke Weston Trust schools this academic year.

Following on from the success of the ‘careers’ theme last year, Gretton have decided to hold their very own ‘Gretton World Records’ month.

The month started with pupils exploring the Guiness World Records before ‘Gretton’s World Records’ was launched in a special assembly. Pupils watched videos of World Records being showcased before being able to observe their own teachers and support staff trying to become Gretton record breakers. These activities included seeing how many pieces of penne pasta they could get on a single piece of spaghetti held in their month without using their hands, and using their hands to see how tall a dice tower they could make by stacking dice up on a lice lolly stick held in their mouths.

Pupils then spent the day visiting a variety of zones to try and become a a Gretton Record breaker. These included the creative zone, activity zones, building zone, curriculum zone and food zone. Challenges included toilet roll tower building, skipping and cup stacking.

To draw the month to an end, an awards ceremony was held to congratulate the award winners on their achievements. All winners were presented with a medal and certificate.

Mrs Sanders said: ‘We decided to focus this years ‘Ambition For All’ month on record breaking because we wanted to do something completely different to what we did last year. We thought about what children would be interested in and how we could aim to be the very best in something. This then gave us the idea to start looking at Guiness World Record books and we came up with the idea of having our very own ‘Gretton World Records’.

‘This meant that our pupils would definatley be able to achieve and be the best within our school. We also thought about how we could be inclusive of all children whether they were from Year 6 or from EYFS.  We therefore made sure each challenge was slightly differentiated for their abilities so they all had a chance of becoming a winner. This meant that for our triangle challenge the older pupils used smaller cotton buds whilst the younger years used the larger ice lolly sticks.

‘This month was focused on the Trust and school value of being ambitious whilst also highlight sportsmanship; showing the pupils that it’s also about the taking part and encouraging each other, which was modelled in our assembly with the teacher challenges.

‘Well done to everyone who participated in our very own ‘World Record’s’ and particularly to our record breakers for their achievements.’

The Ambition for All campaign is a single focus on improving academic outcomes and opportunities for character development that will run in all our Trust schools throughout this academic year. It applies to all areas of the Trust’s schools’ operations to ensure students receive the highest quality teaching and wider development opportunities within a supportive and encouraging environment, where adults live and breathe ambition for student success in all its forms. Implicit within this approach is a focus on the progress of disadvantaged students and of high ability students, whatever their background.
