Mathematics

Without mathematics, there's nothing you can do. Everything around you is mathematics. Everything around you is numbers.

~Shakuntala Devi

At Gretton, we support our children to develop a love of maths from the earliest possible days of Reception so they can grow to enjoy maths and apply their skills both in the classroom and to the world around them.  We know that our curriculum works - our maths outcomes at the end of Key Stage 2 for 2023 put us in the top 10% of schools nationally for maths.

Our maths curriculum teaches children the foundational skills of arithmetic as a priority alongside developing reasoning and problem-solving skills.  We use the Big Maths scheme which prioritises developing basic skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) and is designed to help children become confident and fluent mathematicians.

We use the White Rose scheme to support our maths teaching.  In this, each step is carefully planned out using a variety of representations (pictorial, abstract and concrete) as we realise that all children learn in different ways. It is this variation that enables children to become more successful when making links to different concepts and also being able to adapt to problems seen in a variety of ways.

Our approach to maths enables all children to become fluent in maths, whilst being able to reason and problem solve – whatever their ability - and gives them a secure and solid foundation for their next stage of education.

You can find out more about the Big Maths scheme here and the White Rose scheme here.
