Pupils as Leaders

Respect. Responsibility. Leadership.

At Gretton, we want our children to develop into responsible, respectful and active citizens who leave us ready to make a contribution to their next school community and to the wider world.  Giving children the opportunity to take on leadership roles across the school helps them to develop those skills that will help them contribute positively to society.

Under our Standards Team umbrella, our pupil leadership teams, contribute positively to our school community, actively embedding the school's values and effecting change across the school.

Our School Council represents the views of all of our children. It gives children the opportunity to make their voices heard and feel part of the whole school community.

At the beginning of each school year, each year group votes for two children in their class to represent them at the School Council meetings. The School Council helps to provide a voice for all pupils and meets weekly to discuss how we can improve our school and how we can make a positive contribution to society. Their work includes:

  • Deciding which charities, local, national and global, we would like to fundraise for or support.
  • Working collaboratively with local organisations in the village, such as the Parish Council and the Recreation Ground Committee.
  • Providing feedback to key members of staff on what children would like to see happening at break times and lunchtimes.
  • Providing feedback to the school's site team on health and safety issues

Below are some examples of their work.

November 2024

We worked with the Gretton Baptist Chapel to fill shoeboxes to support the Link to Hope Shoebox appeal, providing gifts to families in war-torn parts of Eastern Europe.

We filled over 20 shoeboxes which were collected by Karen and Denise and taken to Romania.  Below are the School Council presenting the boxes.

June 2024

School Council were asked by the Parish Council to come up with ideas as to how we can encourage safer driving through Gretton.  School Council chose to hold a demonstration outside school reminding road users to drive slowly past.  They were joined by our local Neighbourhood Policing Officer, George Smith.

The Gretton Primary Academy Sports Crew is made up of a group of students that want to keep our school active by encouraging others to take part in sporting activities during the school day at break and lunch times.

The Sports Crew have been given training by a representative from the Corby, Oundle and Thrapston School Sports Partnership to set up and run games on the playground and have actively contributed to the purchasing of playground equipment and designing games areas on the playgrounds.

Our Healthy Eating Ambassadors from Key Stage 2 support younger children in the hall during lunchtimes, helping them to make healthy choices about their food.

Our House Captains are democratically elected from Year 6 to represent their House.  They decide what rewards the members of their house will receive if they win the termly House Points competition and also help staff decide what House Team events will be held throughout the year.

October 2024 - Halloween Painting

In October we gathered in our Houses to create gorgeous Halloween masterpieces.  Every member of the House produced their own Halloween fingerprint design which were then combined into whole House pieces of art.

December 2024 - Christmas Card Designing

Before Christmas, we gathered in our Houses to produce beautiful Christmas cards to take home.  Older children helped younger children with their creations with each House having its own unique design.

Children from Key Stage 2 play an active role at break times and lunch times on the playground with children from Reception to Year 2, role modelling how to be good friends and setting up games and activities for children to play.

Our Reading Ambassadors ensure that our school library is well maintained and run sessions for younger children at lunch times to encourage them to develop a love of reading.
