RSHE 2026 Consultation

From September 2020, the government introduced a new Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education curriculum. Relationships and Health Education became mandatory for all pupils in primary schools from summer 2021 onwards, with schools retaining the option to teach non-mandatory aspects of sex education.

Since then, we have delivered our RSHE curriculum as part of our wider PSHE curriculum, following consultation with relevant stakeholders.

However, new statutory guidance was published by the Department for Education in July 2025. As a result, all schools are required to update their policies and curriculum ahead of the implementation deadline in September 2026.

Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education Statutory Guidance.

The updated framework introduces several enhancements to ensure the curriculum remains relevant and protective for children in today’s world, including:

  • Personal Safety: New content on recognising risks related to fire, water, roads and railways.
  • Mental Wellbeing: Increased focus on emotional regulation, managing feelings such as loneliness, and understanding grief and loss.
  • Online Safety: Expanded guidance on navigating digital spaces, including online financial harms, scams and age-restricted content.
  • Biological Accuracy: Reinforced use of correct anatomical language for safeguarding purposes.

As a school, we have amended our PSHE and RSHE curriculum to reflect these changes and ensure that it:

  • Meets statutory requirements
  • Reflects pupils’ age, physical and emotional maturity
  • Respects our children’s religious and cultural backgrounds
  • Is inclusive of pupils with SEND
  • Aligns with our school values and ethos
  • Prepares children to stay safe, healthy and confident in their relationships

Our teaching is delivered using the Cambridgeshire PSHE programme, a high-quality, evidence-based and age-appropriate curriculum. It revisits key themes with increasing depth and maturity and is fully aligned with the DfE’s 2025–2026 statutory requirements. It also provides clear guidance for teachers on vocabulary, safeguarding and sensitive topics.

We would now like to consult with all parents and carers regarding these updates through a short survey. This can be accessed below or via ClassDojo. Your views on our policy and curriculum are welcomed and should be submitted by Friday 3rd July, so they can be considered before the final policy is published.
